I don’t know whether the Chinese have read this verse by Sayyed Sadiq Hussain Shah (not by Allama Iqbal) but what they did was exactly according to its spirit.

What if the odds are against you, think positive, they are meant to benefit you.


Chinese scientist Yoton Lu has outlined the blueprints of China’s very own supercomputer chips. The Chinese were forced to do so following a ban by the US on Intel processor exports to the country. Uncle Sam didn’t want the high-end Xeon and Xeon Phi parts to enter China’s defence labs and its supercomputer industry.

China needed these parts as they were essential in building powerful supercomputers. And the Chinese came up with a workaround.

The platform reports Dr Lu saying that China’s upcoming supercomputer the Tianhe-2A – ready to work before the end of 2016 – will be powered by the homemade Digital-Signal Processors (DSPs),

About Tianhe-2A:

  • The machine is expected to perform at a staggering 100PFLOPs or 100,000 calculations per seconds at its peak.
  • Uses the power of 18MW.
  • System RAM: 3 petabytes
  • Processor: Tianhe-2A will use the Chinese DSP instead of Neon Phi which is now being used in Tianhe-2.
  • The Tianhe-2A will be build from 18000 nodes.
  • Running file-system 30PB.

Uses of DSPs

Normally DSPs are used in doing audio and signal processing, speech recognition, video compression and so on.

Speaking about the uses of DSPs, The Platform co-editor Nicole Hemsoth reports, “The Tiahne-2 machine (and its eventual successor sporting the DSP accelerators) is housed at the National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) in China.

“DSPs are frequently used in embedded military applications, including remote sensing, radar, and other activities — and Lu did tell the group this week that NUDT has had extensive experience with DSPs.”

This is one of the best examples of the

“if you won’t let us do, we’ll do it ourselves”
